I’ve often wondered where all of those colour names come from in the CSS spec. Things like SkyBlue and DimGray. Who makes these up and how?
It turns out that no-one really knows but this mailing list reference said that they began in 1986 from MIT with an old X Windowing system (Courtesy of: BoltClock).
That said, tonight I did find out where the colour rebeccapurple (shown in the banner) came from and the story is a little sad. I know I won’t be able to do justice to the story, so read this from Eric Meyer and a small piece in tribute, to find out more of the story.
Hi! Did you find this useful or interesting? I have an email list coming soon, but in the meantime, if you ready anything you fancy chatting about, I would love to hear from you. You can contact me here or at stephen ‘at’ logicalmoon.com
